Staff absentteism costs companies in the UK in the region of £666 per employee per year (3.1% of the payroll) which includes lost production and the expense of covering the absence with temporary staff or overtime, according to the CBI Absence and Labour Turnover Survey for 2008. The CBI also estimated that indirect costs, like lower customer satisfaction, could add another £263 per employee per year. In 2007 the UK lost £19.9 billion to absence.
